Turkeybowl '10

It was the 5th annual Turkeybowl! What a BOWL!! The boys woke up to SNOW SNOW SNOW!! They were so excited!! It was amazing! The fathers vs. sons match up was at 11:00am this year. We had to do some hard core bundling...and they were off!! There was a great turnout...Of course the Dad's brought in some 'ringers'....to no avail, I'm afraid!
I braved the elements with the help of an English Toffee latte' and a splash of Kahlua!! ;)

Halloween '10

This was the year of..."Whatcha wanna be?"...."I don't know??" It went right up to the last minute...but we got'er figured out and the kids had a great night!

After several stops to all the Grandparents and Friends...

We ended up at Steve and Bec's for her Haunted Nurse's Station! It was a hoot! I realize that I'm running out of years as my kids start to peel off and go with friends instead...but it was fun none the less.

NCCTK also did their 'tent and treat' the next night so we pulled out the reserve costume and braved the lines! Kal and I had a good time....I'm just glad Halloween only comes one time a year! ;)

The King Ranch Pumpkin Patch

Dean and Linda came up with a great idea last spring and planted a little pumpkin patch. So this fall we reaped the benefit and had a great pumpkin adventure. Canning some Salsa and bagging some Apple Sauce

We were happy to be graced with cousin LD's presence mid October. Soooo what did we do...we put him to work. On a fun and sunny Saturday afternoon, LD, Shane, mom and I canned 20 jars of Salsa and 20+ bags of Applesauce. It was a hoot. Lots of chopping, stirring and cooking. NY Life Trip to Boca Raton Florida

Every year Shane has the opportunity through work to earn a trip. This year it was to Boca Raton Florida. We had a really great time. I didn't get the camera out very much...but we didn't really do a whole lot. There was some beach time, some pool time and some bar time....mixed in of course with NY Life meetings and dinners! We were excited our Friends from OR, were going to be there and for the 3rd year in a row spent the whole time hanging out with them! So thanks again to Rory and Mandy for a great time!

We finished the trip with some Sushi at Morimoto's Restaurant in our Hotel...It was good, but it doesn't touch our Sushi her in Lynden. Sending some love to U-mi!

My First (ONLY) Marathon

Been there done that, don't ever need to do it again! 9 months of training...100's of miles run. I feel very accomplished...not enough to want to do it again! But I am proud! Not the greatest weather day

Football Season '10

In an effort to get caught up on the blog...I'm going to keep the writing to a minimum and get the pictures loaded up.

Truman playing varsity football this year for Lynden Christian. He had a great year. He worked very hard and it showed. The team didn't end up with a winning season...but I think that this year really developed a passion for Football. He can't wait for next year!! I didn't get a ton of pictures...He's #88 on the far side of the picture. Wide reciever and on defense, a defensive back.

Jake and Taiji had their first experience with School ball. They both went out for and made the 7th grade Football team. They had a fantastic year, going undefeated and Taiji had at least 5 TD's on the year.

Taiji was also the defensive Captain running all the plays in.

Jake's role had a little less glamour...he was the Center...his claim to fame however was that he got to touch the ball every play.

Kali's first day!!

My baby started Kindergarten this year! We chose to go with the full time class. It was the right decision!! She's in love with her teachers, her friends, the activities and her new best pal chuck chuck (aka Chestnut the class hamster) She was sooo excited! Up at the crack of dawn and all set and ready to go!!

I know I know...behind again!! I hate that, that is becoming the normal with this blog!! UGH!! Oh well...all I can do it pick up where I left off and keep on trucking...so here it goes!

The boys started school with all sorts of new things and changes... Truman is a sophomore and now driving himself and sometimes the boys to school. He is no longer the little Freshman...which he loves...still not toooo cool for a first day picture!
Taiji and Jake are now in the 7th grade!! Middle school! They are participating in school sports, moving from classroom to classroom and living out of their lockers.
They are excited!

And they are off!!

It's hard to believe this is my world...with this teenager and these preteens...where did the time go!!

Oh Dear Heavenly Father, Please keep your eyes on these boys and their hearts in your hands!! Amen!

A Fair Affair!

With each year that my kids grow I think, 'this age is my favorite'...probably because they are my kids and I tend to be a little overly proud of them...but this year was a hoot at the fair...I love this age!! ;) Truman is 16 and showed little interest, other then working in the pits on Derby day...Jake and Taiji are 12 and they had a blast running around with their friends, but still aren't too cool to spend some time with Mom and little sis....of course I had to bribe them a bit...but they did it! Kali is 5 and loves everything, she was a great partner! The weather at the NW Washington Fair this year was Awesome! We had a great time walking around, riding the rides and eating the food...here are a few pics of our adventures! Taiji with Kali doing the obstacle course.

Demo Derby 2010

Derby time once again. It's a family tradition, Shane's passion....and I just go along for the ride. This year, as with most year's, did not disappoint. There was 1 truck, 2 crazy eight cars and 8 demolition derby cars. It's a team effort and the goal is to have at least one car in the top 5. This year we managed to have one car win the whole thing and also take 3rd, 4th and 5th. Shane won his heat in the afternoon and ended up 5th overall!! It was a beautiful, HOT day!! We all had a great time...until next year!! Shane and his right hand man, Trum, working on all the finishing touches before the derby.

Water Slides part II....I'm just to old for this!!

I wasn't going to post this...these pictures are not some of my best...but the reality is, I probably look and act more this this then I don't so if I'm going to have a 'true' family blog that really depicts our family I thought I better post. Water slides part II is Jake talking me into doing the 60ft drop with him. I'm not afraid of heights...but I am afraid of losing my top in public!! So off we went, Jake, Luuk and myself. The climb to the top was long.... I'm pretty sure the boys thought I wouldn't go through with it!

The funny part was I was the one that had to do the convincing! Emily got a shot of us at the top.

This picture just cracks up the kids...it's my what in the heck...why did I do that...that really sucked....I ain't doing that again.....EVER....face!!

No summer would be complete without a trip to the Birch Bay Water slides. Of course we picked one of the coldest days of the summer to go...but at least the lines were short. Taiji had been kidnapped by some friends and so he missed the activities and Truman was working...but we still managed to have some fun with the Veening cousins, Jake and Kali. Swimming Lessons...and a little fish is born!!

This is the year that Kali has come out of her shell and decided that she wanted to learn how to swim. I credit our friend 'Dory'. She worked with Kali while at Moses Lake and got her really excited about swimming. When we got back to Lynden we started private lessons with Abbey and within a couple of lessons Kali was swimming with her head in the water, taking breathes and kicking legs. She did so good!! We are excited about what next year will bring! The little swimmer!

Remembering Abbey's Heavenly Homecoming

I wish after 7 years I had some supreme wisdom that I could pass on. But honestly...I just still really miss her. I wish that instead of picking flowers with Kali to take to Abbey at the cemetery...it was Kali and Abbey picking flowers to take to me for our kitchen table. I wish that I could here them laughing together...in fact I would settle for an all out sister brawl, just to hear her voice again...I miss her!!

But I do thank Jesus that I will get to see her again...for now I will just have to ask him for some extra patience.

This is how we remembered Abbey this year and her heavenly homecoming 7 years ago.

With the stress and time spent on the baseball tournament....when it was all said and done, it was time for a little fun, and family time!! We decided to spend one more night in Moses Lake then spent the whole next day enjoying the sun and each other at the water slides. We had a great time with the Olighschlagers. MosesLake from the eyes of Kali

Kali is a trooper. She has been to more baseball, basketball, football games then most girls will see in a lifetime. She has moments of great patience and then well, not so much. The one thing she does love is when these games brings us to a Hotel! She LOVES hotels. Something about her whole family staying in one room, going out to eat and swimming makes her sooo happy. She's even able to tolerate a couple of extra baseball games knowing there is a lake or a bbq after. Here are a couple of pictures of Moses Lake from the eyes of Kali! Swimming in the Lake. This trip brought us a new and improved swimming Kali. With the help of Dory, Kali really came out of her shell and became quite a little fishy!! She never liked to put her face in the water before...now she's got it in more then out!!
Over the last several years I realized that in order for me to watch a whole game I needed a bag of tricks to keep Kali...and the rest of the kids busy! Works every time!

Our room at the hotel had this giant closet...Kali quickly converted it in to her very own room! It worked like a charm!! Here she is with Duke watching a movie!

MosesLake State Baseball 12u Tournament

As per my new norm...I'm once again playing catch up. On the 2nd weekend in July we headed over the mountains to MosesLake to participate in the State tournament for 12u. Jake and Taiji have been playing on the Lynden Allstar team since they were 9. It's been a great run, placing 3rd each year. This is the last year for them in the Cal Ripken league and they were hoping to best their 3rd place finishes. It is a great group of boys and with some blow outs and a couple nail biters they took 2nd place. It was a lot of fun!! Opening ceremonies....The Lynden Allstars!

After finishing up the Stars and Stripes tourney with a victory (see post below) we decided to celebrate by getting a few fireworks and creating our own show in the backyard. The kids were excited!! Here is Jake below showing off some of the loot! And Miss Kali showing off her sparklers...which she called sprinklers!!
Of course no fireworks show is complete without a little concert....Shane chose AC/DC. Not my first choice...but it went well with the banging!!

4th of July Tournament Champs

The boys have been playing a lot of baseball...in fact over the last two weekends they have won two tournaments. Pretty Awesome!! We are now getting geared up to leave for the state baseball tournament this week....hopefully we can win that one too!! I'll keep ya posted!! This was the boys right after the win!

An Ice Cream Surprise

Kali and Shane made some ice cream the other night. The Hypothesis was that when Truman came home he would want some ice cream and we would send him out to the garage to get the ice cream and then he would scream...because his new ride would be sitting there...well, the ice cream was made and he did indeed go out to get it, what we couldn't count on was the fact that he would not pay attention to what was sitting in the garage and walk right back into the house with out even seeing it....DORK!! The Ice Cream Makers.....

A Seattle Get Away

Every June 30th New York Life Seattle GO invites us down to Seattle to celebrate the end of their council year. This year we found a great hotel in the U district called Hotel Decca. They were awesome enough to lose our reservation so we landed the suite on the 16th floor. Check out our view...AMAZING!

I'm not feeling very wordy tonight...so the pictures may have to do the talking. A couple of weekends ago Kate and Rolf talked us in to joining them at the Lynden KOA for a weekend camping trip. We aren't much of campers...but with Rolf and Kate's help we managed to have a wonderful time. Jake and Truman were both going to be heading out for a week so they came for the afternoon and were able to fish and hang out...they are both counting the days until they can join us there.
Thanks to Dean and Linda we were able to live in comfort in their cozy RV. Us on the right and Rolf and Kate's Trailer on the left. It was a great spot!

Truman Turns 16!! YIKES!!

I really can't believe it!! You kinda talk about it when they turn 13 how 16 is only 3 years away...then 14...15...but for some reason you still aren't prepared for 16!! It's the beginning of independence...learning to let go and trust them to remember everything you taught them and actually use it. We are proud of Truman. He is a good kid with a good heart. He did well in his Freshman year and is now a busy with summer ball (FB, BB and Basketball). He has a summer job and is proving himself to be more responsible then we thought, which is a blessing! Last week is passed both his written and driving tests and now has his licence. So watch out for him on the road....and feel free to call with a driving report!! LOL!! Here is the gang celebrating Trum!

He's pretty easy to shop for...either champs certificates, Itunes or anything xbox related and you are usually good to go!!

I realized the other day that I hadn't blogged in 5 weeks. In my head I had been blogging regularly...so a little catch up is way over due!! We are a busy bunch and I don't know if anyone is even folling this anymore...but if you are, bare with me! I will try a little harder!! We welcome the newest member of the family...little baby boo! When I say member of the family I mean extended...my mom, rescued this little cute from certain death. He was in a paper box and in the paper baler about to get crunched when one of the men spotted him and grabbed him. Mom bottle fed him, burped him and he is now thriving! The kids love him and he loves to be loved!!

Kali was even able to use him for a school project. The shoe box parade. She was given the letter K....so she made Kali's Kitty Kennel!! Boo was a hit!

Every kid loves field day!! The weather was looking like it was going to be crappy, but ended up very nice! Jake was on the blue team and Taiji on the red...unfortunately for them the white team won this year!!

Preschool Field Trip

Kali was blessed with two very special, very different preschools this year. She loved them both equally for different reasons. I credit all her teachers for her love for school and for how quickly she is learning and growing!!

At Tiny Treasures Kali took one last field trip into Bellingham to the aquatic center. There the kids learned a lot about different sea creatures and environments.

While at the field trip I got a call that Taiji had fallen off the top of a human pyramid and landed on his face. Grandma stepped in and brought him some children's aspirin. (He wanted to stay at school because he didn't want the extra homework...only Taiji!!) But by the time I got back from the field trip it was apparent that he was not going to be able to stay. He got home and fell asleep. Then woke up and threw up...which of course is a sign of a concussion. I called the dr. office and made an appt. but they said if he should throw up again to take him directly to the ER. Well, as we were loading to go to the dr.'s he puked again...off to the ER we went. It was a miracle...not a soul was in there. Guela was working in Bellingham and came over to be with us. We were in a room in a blink saw a Dr. one blink later and were given the diagnosis a blink after that...slight concussion and a broken nose!

Taiji was a trooper and quickly bounced back!!

Mothers Day Madness!!

Mothers Day was a gorgeous day...the sun was shining and baseball was in full swing. Unfortunately Kali made her way onto the field just as one of Taiji's line drives was making IT's way down the field. The contact point was the cheek. Which truly was a blessing...had it hit her mouth I'm afraid she would have lost teeth, had it hit her jaw it might have dislocated it and her eye...don't want to even think about that!! We thanked God that it wasn't worse. Of course that doesn't take away from the pain in the cheek!! Here are a couple of shots of Kali's Ouchy!! Day one

The Great American Egg Drop!

The great American egg drop is a fun little preschool project. You are instructed to create an encasement for a raw egg that is no larger then 7x7x7. You are to fill it up with whatever you think will protect the egg from breaking if dropped from 10 to 15 feet. Then decorate the box to suit your fancy. Kali and I had a great time working on this project. We filled our box with this foam stuff. It was my idea and I really believed to was the perfect thing. Kali decorated her box with tons of princess, pink and purple stickers. It was a beautiful box and was gonna win!! (there are no winners....I just tend to go a little overboard with my competitive nature)

The day was perfect. Sunny, plus we had taiji with us to witness our greatness!! We went to the Velthuziens little mini farm. The kids really enjoyed checking out all the animals.

Then it was time for us to test our boxes. Teacher Melinda threw over an egg to show the kids what happens when you don't protect it....of course the first time, It didn't break! ;) This had me confident that our creation would hold up to the test set before us!!

Then it was our turn...here is the box going over the edge floating gently through the air. It landed with a thud...but again still very confident. A couple of minutes later the kids were instructed to open their boxes...Kali opened her box and I took a picture of an egg I thought had withstood the challenge...I told her to go and show her teacher and get her card stating that her egg made it....she returned with a card that said, 'Opps, my egg broke' I looked down and sure enough the egg had hairline cracks all over it!! I felt like a failure!! Thanks goodness Kali isn't as competitive as me and pretty much forgot about it by the time she got back on the bus. I on the other hand am still working through it!!

It was a fun year for us...Truman, as a freshman made varsity! I know I kinda sound like a bragging mom...Ok, I am!! It was a tough year for LC Baseball, lots of growing pains...but they had a few key victories and we are looking forward to many more years of watching him play!

Guela started a tradition many years ago that all the granddaughters would get American girl dolls. There was not specific age determined, pretty much just when they were ready....well Kali was ready!! We have been pouring over the catalog for months and finally decided to put it in Guelas hands. Here she is ready to find out which doll Guela chose! Kali's big joke over her whole birthday was, "mom you got me a box...thank you so much!!" Such a ham!!

A Mariner Adventure!

Every year we try to take in at least one Mariners game. The boys LOVE it...Kali tolerates it, and I can't get enough. Safeco Field is beautiful and with the retractable roof you know you aren't going to be sitting in a down pour. This trip we had over cast sky's but the temp was fine. The Mariners pulled a mariner and lost the game in the last inning...but we had a good time. Kali was more about the team store and the playground but she was a trooper, you have to understand this girl watches more baseball in a week then most little girls have to in a lifetime!
Jake is a kid after my own heart...I love to keep the book at a baseball game, and between the two of us we got the whole game on paper! Wish it could have been a better game! :)

In about the 8th inning the crowd started to thin out and the kids moved up to the front trying to snag a home run shot (we were hopeful)! They didn't catch anything....but they are pretty cute!!

After the game the boys were in desperate need of haircuts...to off the the mall we went. All 4 boys got cuts...Taiji's took about 10min, Truman's about 15min, Shane's about 20mins and then Jakes.....45 mins! It was pretty funny....and even funnier still is the kid needs a haircut again already!!

After haircuts we went to the Macaroni Grill. Kali proclaimed it her birthday dinner...so it was!

So there you have it...a Mariner adventure that included a road trip, a baseball game, haircuts, dinner and yet another Kali birthday celebration!! It was a good day!

You will notice that I said in the title, Birthweek! This girl LOVES to celebrate!! We have enjoyed celebrating with her! We started early so that Jake could get in on some of the action. He had suggested that we get her a girl scooter so that she would stop using his..heehee!! She loved it...so whatever his motives it all worked out! Barbie Scooter and helmet! She's flying all over the house...now all we need is a little better weather so that she can do it outside!

Easter 2010

Easter at our house is all about traditions. An early wake up, a yummy breakfast and then the Easter Basket scavenger hunt. As you can see in the picture...Truman is getting a hair too big for this tradition, but he was a trooper and was Kali's right hand man. It was a beautiful day and they were off and running. The problem usually comes when they can't read or understand Shane's clues....with a little prompting they usually find them!
Front yard, back yard, to the front to the back and all around....we like to get them nice and tired before we head to church!

Once all the eggs and clues are found they are lead to the Easter Basket. This year it was guarded by Abbey.

After church up at Deming to listen to Uncle Dean...it was off to Guela's for a fun time with the family! The kids colored a bunch of eggs and Truman and Taylor filled a couple of plastic ones with candy and then they hid them all! They were troopers!

This is Taiji...the jester...ham ball and all around good kid! They don't get much cutier then Taij! He has those big brown eyes and the lashes that don't quit! Taiji is every one's best friend. He has a heart for doing what is right and Loves Jesus with all his heart! He is a great student and works very hard!! We are soooo very proud of him and are honored to call him our son! Jake Turns 12!!

At 4:44pm on 4/4/98 Stephen Jacob Poag was born and officially gave me the greatest job in the world...I was HIS mom!! The last couple of days were spent celebrating him and everything that he has brought to this family. He is an amazing kid with a true love of life and everyone in his life. He is a pleaser, a jokester, gamer and all around BOY!! He loves his sports, video games and music. He still thinks girls are icky and can be very persistent when he wants something...Some day he may have a longer attention span...but maybe not!! I love this kid and am sooo very proud of him!! Happy Birthday Jake!! Dinner out with the fam!!

We thought it would be fun to have a bunch of his friends over for a surprise party. The boys actually pulled it off...he had no clue!! And you can see from the pictures he was pretty excited about it!

Part of the Party included a trip out to Uncle Dean's for an airsoft war out in the 25 acres. And what good is an airsoft war if you don't have a good gun....believe me this has been an adjustment for me in having boys...I never even thought about guns growing up, but these boys love a good airsoft war!! They had sooo much fun!

After airsofting it was back to the house for pizza, pop and cake!

And a little downtime watching TV!! Nobody wanted to go home!

I'm so thankful for this kid, he has been a blessing for 12 years and I look forward to a lifetime of birthdays and blessings with him!

6th Grade Mexican Fiesta

Every year the 6th grade class puts on a Mexican Fiesta during their unit on Mexico. We had missed it with Truman because of a baseball tournament, so I really didn't know what to expect. My job was to bring 6lbs of refried beans. After the kids ate (they polished off all the beans) they put on a little show for the Parents, 5th graders and 1st graders. It was really cute. I love 6th grade....they aren't quite as annoying as they used to be and not yet to cool like the 7th graders. The whole class participated and I think that they were really having fun.

Near the end the 6th graders had to snag a first grader and teach them a dance and then dance with them. The boys both grabbed kids they knew and had a blast!

Preschool Spring Program

Oh little Kali is growing up faster then I want!! Last week she and her class put on an adorable Preschool Program. It involved a lot of singing...motions...and waving and giggling!! They did such a great job!

Today was a big day!! My little Kali was born with NO hair...I have willed it to grow...and grow and grow!! I have loved to braid, curl, pony and more!! But lately neither one of us have enjoyed the snarls and brushing. About 3 months ago we decided that we would let it get long enough and then cut it for locks of love! It took a couple of conversations to understand what that meant...but then she was all over it!! Well today was the day!! She woke up and said, "today is haircut day"!!! So excited!! It was an amazing experience!! My friend Melissa made the day!! She treated Kali like a queen...and of course the queen needs a posse (Guela, Aunt Kate, Grandma and Mom)!! Olympics Dutch Style

We were very fortunate this year to be so close to where the Winter Olympics were being held in Vancouver. We had thought about going up and trying to get tickets...but unfortunately they were a little pricey. So we thought we would stay home and enjoy them from the comfort of our couch for free. Then Brother-in law Rolf informed us of another fun experience...The Holland Heiniken House. It is an arena that the Dutch take over and make into a giant Bar with huge screens, dutch food and dutch beer. It is very popular and the lines are generally 2hours long...that is if you don't have a Dutch passport. We don't of course...but Rolf does he went up all week...enjoying the speed skating, food and talking Dutch with fellow natives. Well on Saturday Rolf and Kate invited Jessie and Brett and Shane and I to join them. We were so excited for the opportunity to be a part of the excitement. Kate and I decided to surprise Rolf with matching orange shirts. We had a blast!!! We were even able to get downtown to see the craziness!! We made memories that will last a lifetime!! Thanks ROLF and KATE!! The Ozone was a couple of blocks that they blocked off for different events and concerts. The HHH was inside.

Well here it is!! I know, it's about time!! But better late then never!! For the last couple of months I've been working on a giant room swap. Truman to the front room, Jake and Taiji to Truman's old room and Kali downstairs into Jake and Taiji's old room. It's been a project. All of the kids are now in their rooms and loving it...I still have some work to do up stairs...but that is another post altogether!! Here's a shots of the room before me and my paint can took over!

Kali for one LOVES preschool!! She is professional!! She goes 5 days a week....two different preschools. I know...I'm one of those moms...oh well at least I can admit it!! At least she thrives and loves every minute!! This week was backwards day and PJ day. Here are a few shots of a couple of fun dress up days. Backwards day....she had to have the hood up on her face...little stinker!

A weekend adventure!

It was another VanDalen road trip and this time we brought reinforcements....Guela!! The logistics of this day were insane...however we were able to pull it off! The day started with having to get Jake and Taiji to their games at 8:00am....I went to go get my hair done at 8:00 (I know a little high maintenance...but when you have a stylist like Melissa...you get in when she can get you in) anyways...Truman had to get up so that in case Kali woke up an adult (or adult like figure) would be available. After hair I headed to Jake and Taiji's game....then it was back to Lynden to get Truman to LC to catch the bus to Seattle Christian game....grab Kali and head to Jake and Taiji's second game at 11:00. Once they won their 2nd game we grabbed Guela loaded up the car and headed down south to watch Truman's games. We got there in time to watch the C team. He played great and they won...however he only played 2 quarters so that he could play 2 quarters of JV but we need to be to a dinner in Bellevue....so Guela drove us to our hotel with Kali in tow. We stayed and got ready and had a ride in place to pick us up. Guela headed back to Seattle Christian to get the rest of the crew. We had a great time at our dinner and LC swept Seattle Christian. Guela came back to the hotel to hold down the fort, swimming, xboxing, and snacking. Kali thought that this was her perfect world....Hotel, brothers, swimming, guela and hotel...I know I said that twice...but this girl LOVES a hotel!! We all fell into bed around midnight and slept in...after a frustrating but delicious trip to IHOP it was off to Uwajima (SP?) our favorite Asian market....once stocked up we were homeward bound. WOW that was a mouth full....and a weekend full, but we had a great time and can't wait for the next adventure!! Truman d-ing it up!!

A Faber Family Christmas Gathering

My last Christmas post...January 11...not sooo bad!

On December 26th the Faber Clan came over for a little Christmas Cheer. Appetizers, taco bar, and yummy desserts were on the menu. We had a great time hanging out, eating, opening presents and for the 2nd year creating ginger bread houses. Thanks to Brett and Jessie and some new methods the houses were quite successful. The little girls even got in on the action creating Christmas trees for every one's houses. It was a fun time had by all!!

A quiet family Christmas

Christmas morning was just what Christmas morning should be. It was relaxing...we enjoyed some yummy breakfast (to me that means that there were no eggs included!!) We slowly opened presents and pretty much did nothing else all day...it was awesome!! Of course the kids were thrilled with their loot and we were happy they were happy! I see these beautiful children wearing their Christmas Stocking hats and getting ready to open their stockings...but then I look up and see the one lone stocking still hanging there and I'm reminded that Abbey has spent her 7th Christmas in Heaven, what a party that must be!! Oh so bitter sweet! She is missed soooo much! But yet, it is this time of year that God revealed he had a plan and sending his son to be born in a manger was just the beginning! What a gift!! I hope you all had a chance to see God and his plan in this Holiday season!!

A NewYork Life Christmas Gathering

It's an annual affair....our Christmas Gathering that is! And as usual I'm a glutton for punishment and for the 5th year did all the food. This year we decided on an Asian theme. It was fun but a ton of work! We pulled some ideas from all sorts of cultures. Thai Spring rolls, Chinese egg rolls, Japanese Gyoza, Thai Cabbage peanut salad, Japanese Yakisoba, Soy Ginger Salmon....and Dutch Bakery Treats for Dessert....got keep a little Dutch in there. Thanks to my mom the prep was only 4 hours....thanks to my kids the house looked fantastic....thanks to my hubby we were able to get it all on the table....thanks to the wonderful employees for eating it! Shane had a full office this year so we had a full house...13 in all! After munching down we moved on to white elephant gifts....Shane wanted to change it up and have it where the gifts didn't freeze....after much debate we went back to the old rules!! The gifts were great as usual...I think Eddy won by getting the giant footy PJ's!! The best part was that they fit!! Kim and her giant baby...Eddy!
This was pretty funny....Josh opened a blue snuggy and a few minutes later Kristin opened a leopard print snuggy!!

The Lighted Christmas Parade

Nothing like a small town. Every year Lynden puts on a Light Christmas parade. It never disappoints...the weather is always a factor however...and tonight we avoided the rain and snow, but the wind and chill was present. Thanks to Brett and Jess (front street dwellers) we had a great time. This year Shane and the derby boys worked hard to get a derby car ready for the parade and they lit it up like a Christmas tree! About a week ago a letter came home from the school nurse saying that Jake had not passed the school eye test. They recommended that he go and see a eye doctor and get them rechecked. Well you can see the result of that eye exam. Not really sure were this vision is coming from since both of his parents have perfect vision...but for now he likes them and has a great attitude! 4th Annual Turkey Bowl

On Thanksgiving morning for the last four years the boys get up rain or shine and go toss around the ole pig skin. Fathers against sons. The dads had the lead 2-1 going into this meeting. It was a cool but not raining morning. The field was a mess...but they were dressed and ready to go. After a few minutes of stretching (the dads) and a little trash talking (both sides) they were set and ready to go. Of course the old guys brought in a few ringers...but it didn't matter...the sons won! It was a great game and close to the end...they were filthy, but had a GREAT time!!

Kali's Preschool Thanksgiving Program

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Kali had a Thanksgiving program. It was short and sweet and a little nutty to be quite honest. The kids were hilarious! They sang great and attempted a memory verse and tried to spell out something in the end. Lots of laughs...but more importantly it was 3, 4 and 5 years olds praising the Lord! It was beautiful!!

6th Grade Musical- "Best Christmas Present Ever"

Since the first day of School the 6th grade class has been working on the musical "The Best Christmas Present Ever". Both of the boys had active parts. Jake had a speaking part and Taiji was on the stage crew. They both worked soooo hard, learning lines, learning songs and motions. It was AWESOME!! I was so proud!! Mrs. Lennsen is a great teacher that really knows how to get the most out of her students...it was the best I've ever seen! Another special part of this musical was that Jake won a contest and they choose his art work to be on all the flyer's and programs!! Didn't know he had it in him.

Here is my little Kali belle and the many faces that she has. What a little blessing this little one is to us. Don't get me wrong...she has her moments, but they are far out weighed by the joy she brings!! The other day she and I sat down and were watching some video from when she was 6-12months. You forget just how very precious every stage of their lives are! I must have been going a little over board on how cute she was...because she later asked me, "Mom? Was I cutier when I was a little baby?" Stifling a giggle I answered, "Oh no honey, You were very cute as a baby...but now you are beautiful." For the last 3 years I've had the blessing of being on vacation for my birthday, Montreal, Arizona and Puerto Rico. This year I had the blessing of spending my birthday at home with my favorite people...my family!! Kali and Taiji made me a beautiful crown. Guela brought over cinnamon rolls and Shane made sure I was treated like a princess. We spent the day hanging out, I got a ton of reading in and for dinner we headed to a family favorite, the Cliffhouse for dinner! I don't deserve these people...but I'm glad God thinks I do!! This was the best pumpkin carving ever!! The boys are now actually old enough that they were able to do their own pumpkins from start to finish!! It was awesome! In years past they all start strong and then peter out...so mom is left scraping, tracing, and craving!! The rocked it! Kali even got into it! 2009 Football Season

Well the 2009 Football season for the VanDalen-Poag's is in the books. No injuries and both teams ended up with a 500 record. Truman played his first sport in his High School career and did amazing. It's really hard to come from Jr. High being the king of the castle and have to then learn a new role of backup everything...but he took it in stride and learned a lot! I was sooo proud of him. In one of the last games he had an interception and a on side kick recovery!! It was sooo cool! Trum in action!
Of course no post would be complete with out the family cheer leader!

Jake and Taiji played another year on the New York Life sponsored team. It was great! We had fabulous weather and the boys really took off! Next year on to Jr high Football!

The last game of the season we were going to play in a mud bowl! I had to get a before picture! Unfortunately my battery died right when I was going to take the after shot...but I think that you will be able to get the idea!!

Palm Springs 2009

Last weekend Shane and I headed south to Palm Springs for a NYL council meeting. We were really looking forward to a little time away in the sun...but we were also really looking forward to catching up with our great friends, Rory and Mandy. If you follow the blog, we met them last year in Puerto Rico and had many fun....sometimes crazy adventures!! We were able to relax, golf, read and hang out with some great people!! Project Bed Room Swap-Phase 1 of 4

I was reminded today that I haven't gotten around to posting the pictures of phase one. Actually, the first phase of Project Bed Room Swap...moving Truman into the spare room, was a little harder then I thought. The spare room had always been called 'Abbey's room'. Not because she ever stayed in it...but because it is where all 'her' stuff landed when we moved into this house. We decided that Abbey's stuff deserved a more suitable space so we are working on that as well. As for Truman...he moved into a smaller room....but the advantages are that he has a bigger bed, new stuff, and closer access to the bathroom....also now 'his' bathroom. We had talked about what he wanted for his room and he decided that something to do with Michael Jordan. So the walls went gray and the accent colors are red and black. Shane went online to find some posters, and my mom had this cool Jordan jersey (Thanks Grandma) so we framed and hung it. It's a little bare...but he's a boy and likes it simple...he would however like for me to do a mural of some sort...we will see if my creative juices get flowing and I will let ya know.

As you can see....I've not gotten very far with Kali's new room. Still trying to figure out what we want to do!! She's loving the princess world right now, but I don't want her to grow out of it and have to redo the room in a year...plus, I'm not quite ready to put her downstairs yet. So I will post as I start to work. Of course this is the first room I actually thought to take a before picture of...always a little more dramatic that way!! More to come!

I'm starting to think I should start a little side business of painting....maybe give my dad a little run for his money!! Actually he's just happy that he doesn't have me as a client!! HeeHee!

Project Bed Room Swap-Phase 2 of 4

Road Trip!!

What was going to be a 'got nothing going' kinda a weekend quickly turned into a road trip!! I'm not complaining...I love road trips and this one was perfect!! After Jake and Taiji's football game we loaded up the kids and hit the road and we were off. Ellensburg was the first stop to meet with Marge a client of Shane's that has turned into a great friend. We had dinner with her and then she came to the hotel to watch the kids swim. Then it was off to bed. The next morning after a quick meeting it was time for a little breakfast with Marge and then we were off again, now heading to Seattle to watch the Mariners. With the invitation form our friends at Keybank we were able to enjoy the game in a Suite! The kids thought it was great...the view was awesome! The game was even better...Mariners win 7-1!! We even got to see Griffey hit a 3 run home run!! We loaded back up after the game and headed home...it was about a 28hour turn around, all in all it was a great Road Trip!! Kali was out! She loves a road trip!!

A day in the life of the VanDalen's...Amy up at 6:30 and out the door by 7am for a 15k race in Bellingham....Shane left to tend to the rest of the clan. Thanks Honey!! He got all kids up, fed them all and got them all ready for a day of Football at Friday Harbor. That means one grumpy 15 year old that doesn't want to go cuz it isn't about him, 2 very excited 11 year olds bouncing off the walls because it IS about them and a very dramatic 4 year old that thinks the whole world revolves around her!! Impressive!! Hind sight 9.3miles on a beautiful Saturday morning could have been the easier route!! After he got the gang ready he dropped Kali off at Grandma's to await my return from b'ham...they then headed to Anacortes to catch the Ferry to Friday Harbor. I returned grabbed a shower, Kali and my Mom and then we followed on a later ferry. It was a gorgeous day for a ferry ride and football game...but let's just say the Ferry ride went better then the football game. But all in all a very fun and busy day!! First Day

I won't get to wordy since my last post was a mini book...but the boys had their first day of School on Monday. (Kali didn't start until Wednesday...so she slept in and missed the picture fun...which I'm sure all the boys wish they could have done!! Hee Hee!!) Tradition is tradition and we have taken first day pictures in Abbey's garden since we moved to this house.

An African Adventure....

This adventure started about two years ago, when Brother Blake and Liss felt that they were being called to adopt a little boy from Africa. They went through all the proper channels, found and fell in love with a little boy 6 weeks old. They thought that they would be able to get him last fall but the Lord had different plans and almost a year later they found themselves all finalized and ready to travel. We were soooo excited...baby Grady was finally going to be coming home. The first leg of their journey found them (Blake, Lissa, Taylor, Ellen & Guela) in Dallas with an unexpected 12 hour layover...but they stayed strong, focused and excited. They finally did get to Ethiopia via London at 5am...they were undecided if they would get up and go to church the next day but finally felt lead that God was calling them there. They arrived at church to be greeted by their new son holding a flower for them....what a miracle!! They were immediately able to take him with them and the bonding began...they were able to spend the rest of the week there....learning about Grady, his culture and meeting tons of wonderful people!! But now it was time to go home. They were ready and we ready to see them!! They boarded the plane and headed out...unfortunately they had to make a quick stop in Sudan to drop off a few passengers...this is where the trouble began...Guela (Shane's mom) fainted on the plane and the flight officials said that she could not continue until she had a doctors clearance....in a short amount of time big decisions were having to be made...who stays? How is this going to work? Well after a few minutes it was decided that Guela would get off the plane accompanied by Ellen (nana, Melissa's mom.) The Grandma's were now stuck in Sudan (not one of the safest countries in the world). Blake, Melissa, Taylor and Grady continued home and arrived without further incident. Guela was taken to a clinic and Ellen to a Hotel. They were only able to see each other one time, but Ellen took charge of the situation and was able to make some calls. After a day, Guela was cleared to leave, but it took a 2am phone call to wire some money to have her released. They were able to get on a flight that took them to Cairo, then to Amsterdam, then to Minnesota, then home. They really felt God at work on each and every leg....he kept them safe in a hostile and foreign land...and he bonded them in a way only he could do! We are so happy that they are all home, that they are all safe and now we all have a Great story on how our God works miracles in mysterious ways!! A Day at the NW Washington Fair

The Northwest Washington Fair comes to town once a year for a week! It takes over our whole town and you can almost smell the corn dogs and curly fries from our house!! It was a beautiful week and the Fair was in Tip Top Shape. The kids love to go and I well I go. We went Monday for the derby, the boys went Tuesday for a day of rides, Kali, Jake, Taiji and I went Wednesday for a day of exploring and more rides...then the adults (Shane and I) went on Thursday night for the Foreigner concert. We had a fantastic time...ate way to much, the boys spent way to much....but we have some great memories!! Kali and I going on the rides

Derby 2009

We are a derby family! For the last 23years Shane has built or has helped build his car. I've been apart of the derby for 6 years and have grown to love it! It truly has become just a part of who we are. This year Shane sponsored 6 cars and 2 trucks! Of the top 5 spots we took home 4 of them 1st- Ben #68, 3rd- Nick #85, 4th Monty #18 and Shane 5th with #35! It was Truman's first year on the pit crew and he thinks that next year when he gets his licence he would like to drive....we will see!! Here's our crew with the winning driver!! When I imagined something going wrong for niece Kenz and James wedding...it was more along the lines of the flower girl (Kali) pulling a 'I'm going to be shy moment' and not doing what she was told....Well that was not the case...she was perfect...did a great job, even after the bee stung her in the middle of the ceremony. She whimpered on her way to me...cried a few tears...yelled at the bee, "That was a very BAD BEE!!"....but then pulled herself together and went back up to the front to fulfill her duties....I was so proud!!!

On this day six years ago my heart was broken....and on this day six years ago God started to heal my broken heart. How can that be? One word...GRACE!! I won't even pretend to try to understand it....or even to explain it, but I know that my God did not forsake me. He entrusted me with a miracle, Abbey Mae...and when he decided that he needed her for more important work he granted me his grace to get through the pain on earth, but left me with the promise that I would see her and hold her again. (To quote a favorite book) I will love her forever....for as long as I'm living, my baby she'll be!!

BirchBay round two...actually no seaweed or sand this time. We had to run and drop Truman off at the BirchBay water slides, so I thought I would take the opportunity to spend a little time with my 11's!! We hit the go cart and mini golf place near BirchBay. They had a great time chasing each other around the track and then a great time chasing mom around the putt putt course. Funny and interesting styles...I think we all ended up about even. It was a great time had by all! (ya see what I mean about the promise of a new day!! Today was a good day!) Taiji...Jake could not catch him! I think it's cuz he sooo light!

A Day at the Bay!

I had some friends the other day that were saying that they read the blog and everything just seems so perfect...I'm here to tell ya, that is the furthest thing from the truth. I think I only blog the positive things so that I can sometimes live in that dream land....the truth is, I'm a sucky mom. I yell at my kids everyday...I'm easily angered, frustrated and annoyed!! My kids test me, they are naughty, selfish and rude. I just am so grateful that we have God's grace and forgiveness and the promise of a fresh start if we ask for it!! Where is this coming from you might ask....well yesterday was a day at the beach and I didn't enjoy it...I know the kids did, but I just didn't and I felt...feel guilty about it. I guess this is where I seek that grace and start fresh...even still I was able to get some cute pictures.... The gang building up their forts...

I grew up in New Mexico. My very first best friend was Stacy Polinder. We were joined at the hip and did everything together. We have reconnected over the years....high school, then college and now it's visits in Lynden. She has recently opened up her heart, family and home to two sisters that were just waiting for their forever home! We were very fortunate to meet them the other night...what I didn't expect was that Shae and Kali would become the fast friends that their momma's had been. I pray that with each year and each visit they will go from being fast friends to forever friends. Our Love and Prayers Hoeksemas!!

Kali has never had fear around water....which in turn makes me have lots of fear. I thought it was time for her to have her first round of swimming lessons. Imagine my surprise when her teacher turns out to be a sweet blue eyed girl named Abbey. Oh the irony! Kali did extremely well. She really trusted Abbey and learned a lot. By the end she was jumping in and putting her face in the water blowing bubbles. Here are a few of my favorite shots of the week. Working on her back float.

State Baseball U11- E. Wenatchee Day 5

Our bid for a state title and a trip to regionals fell a little short and the Lynden All Stars take home 3rd place for the 3rd year in a row. This of course is a great accomplishment and the boys should be very proud, but....it was hard! The bats just fell silent and we weren't able to get a hit. The very first inning Stanwood came out to score 4 runs right away and it then became a mental battle for our boys not to get discouraged...it was a roller coaster ride that ended in a 9-2 loss. There were tears and sunken shoulders...but after they got out the initial sadness, it was all about next year. It was a fun run...but now I am relishing the peace that follows! Jake playing shortstop. It was a fun year for Jake because he proved himself an all around great utility player. This season he played, 3rd, 2nd, shortstop, 1st, catcher and right field. He just went where ever they told him and played his heart out. This tournament he played 1st, shortstop, catcher and right field. He and taiji also bat #1 and #2! I'm a very proud mama!!

State Baseball U11- E. Wenatchee Day 4

What a day!! The Lynden All stars win and make it to the semifinals!! It was a great game and those boys had us on the ropes...but Jordan pulled through big time pitching all 6 innings and slamming a triple to clinch it! It was sooooo hot....pushing 104!!! Tomorrow we face a Stanwood team at 11:00am, if we win that we play in the championship at 1:30!! It's been a great tournament with some great families and awesome boys!! Thanks for following the journey and I will let ya know tomorrow how it all played out!! Jake up to bat!

State Baseball U11- E. Wenatchee Day 3

This picture was actually taken the night of day two....just thought it was too cute not to post.

Day 3 in Wenatchee. Our game was at 11:00am. This was the last game in our pool play, it was the toughest team that we faced to date. Ellensburg always puts out a great team. The boys bats came alive in the first inning and with Caden's pitching we pulled out the victory, 5-1.

The great thing about having only one game and it being at 11:00 is that you get the rest of the day and evening to relax and have a little fun.
Some of the families are staying a campground that had a swimming area, they also had a couple of boats...the kids had a blast just being kids...running around, tubing, swimming and eating. Here are a few pictures of our afternoon.

Tomorrow is a big day...the boys start bracket play with single elimination. If they win tomorrow they will play two games on Sunday. The semi's and finals....I'll keep ya posted!!
